SESHEGO Spikers Volleyball Club are the new Limpopo champions of indoor volleyball in the women’s category.

Spikers beat newcomers Thakgalang Volleyball Club 3-0 to be crowned champions at the provincial tournament, which was held at the Ngoako Ramatlhodi Hall in Seshego on Saturday evening.

On the way to the finals, Spikers walloped Evergreen Volleyball Club 2-0 and edged out firm favourites, University of Limpopo, with a 2-1 score line.

Thakgalang, who played in this championship for the first time, brought its u/17 team but age proved to be just a number when they secured the final spot with a 2-0 victory over the more experienced Spartans Volleyball Club. Spartans went home with a bronze medal after beating University of Limpopo in the third and fourth place play-off.

Volleyball pundits believed that the absence of defending champions Komplits Volleyball Club from Bela Bela paved the way for Spikers to be crowned champions, but the head coach of Seshego Spikers, Puleng Mabitsela, said the women were prepared for the tournament and the presence of Komplits would not have made any difference.

“The standard of volleyball in the province is growing. We have new champions from both men and women. This means there are no automatic winners. Our standards have grown in leaps and bounds.

Who thought that an u/17 team from Thakgalang in the Mopani district could reach the finals,” Babitsela asked.

University of Limpopo are the new champions in the men’s category. The team beat Komplits 3-0 and this win put an end to the Bull Dogs’ dominance.

Masokolara from Turfloop took third position in the men’s category.
