POLOKWANE – Eight fencers from Firebird Fencing Club and their coach, Wally Goosen, formed part of the opening act of the recent Face of Savannah competition as part of their plan to introduce fencing as a sport to the Polokwane community.
The fencers dazzled the audience with the dramatic and energetic nature of the sport.
“We wanted to get some exposure and this was an excellent opportunity for us to promote the sport. A lot of people do not know about fencing and we aimed to create a bit of awareness for the sport. Even before the performance began, we already had some enquiries,” said the team manager of Firebird Fencing Club, Tersia Goosen.
The club would like to thank Savannah Mall for the opportunity to perform at the pageant. The club is currently busy with preparations for the Gauteng Open Fencing Championships, which will take place in two weeks. Fencing practise takes place every Thursday at the Polokwane Cricket Club from 18:00 to 20:00.
