WHEN the sponsor of the Matlakwe Semenya u/17 Dream Team tournament promised to sponsor soccer kits for the top two teams of the tournament, they did not expect to see the quality of soccer that was on display.
Therefore, they decided to award the top four teams each with a brand new kit.
The final of the tournament was held at the Mahwai sports ground in Ga-Matlala over the weekend. During the prize-giving ceremony, Phillip Semenya of Dream Team, said what he saw during the tournament made him realise that there was a lot of talent in the area, which needed to be nurtured. He promised that Dream Team would continue to sponsor the event, which he declared would be staged annually.
“We do not have money, but we can talk to people who are prepared to give back to the community. Next year will be bigger and better with more soccer kits to be given to all the participants,” said Semenya.
Jones Mokgapa, a councillor in Ward 16 in the Aganang Municipality offered support to the tournament on behalf of the municipality, and thanked Dream Team for making a difference in the communities of Matlala and Moletjie.
“As the municipality, we say our doors are open. Come talk to us and we will support you. We are grateful to have businessman like Semenya who are not greedy, but share the little they have with the community,” Mokgapa said.
Mike Scorpions FC from Moletjie Ceres were the winners of the tournament and were awarded a trophy, gold medals and soccer kit, while Super FC from Moletjie Ga-Ramphele, Kgoroshi Young Tigers from Moletjie Ga-Kgoroshi and Moetegare Development from Ga-Matlala Moetagare all walked away with brand new kits for finishing the tournament in position two, three and four respectively.
There was no home ground advantage for the host Mahwai Young Stars from Ga-Mahwai in Ga-Matlala, Boratapelo FC from Boratapelo in Ga-Matlala, Vlak Development from Vlakfontein also in Ga-Matlala, as well as Ditenteng Academy from Moletjie, who all received soccer balls for participating in the tournament.
