SAB League kicks off with festival

THE upcoming season of the SAB League promised fireworks as the national delegation, led by league ambassadors comprising former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder, Frank Makua and Orlando Pirates legend, Edward Motale, visited the province to mark the official kick-off of the new, revamped SAB League.

Last season’s top four Capricorn district clubs in the SAB League took on each other at the Seshego Stadium on Sunday afternoon and history repeated itself when Baroka Development FC surrendered their 1-0 lead only to settle for a 2-1 defeat against Maeba Chiefs in the first match of the day.

In the second match, runners-up for last season, Molemole Academy, scored against the run of play and applied the infamous tactic of “parking the bus” on their way to record a 1-0 victory over Mandebele Happy Fighters.

President of South African Football Association Capricorn region, Abel Rakoma, said the football festival was just what the SAB League needed to reiterate its existence in the country.

“The participation was great, coordination was out of this world and the attendance proved that Limpopo people appreciate their local stars.

“The standard of football was so high and this is what will transpire in all our SAB leagues games throughout the district,” said Rakoma, who praised the referees for handling the matches with professionalism and fairness.

SAB Leagues are played regionally, with the overall winner of the play-offs qualifying to play in the ABC Motsepe League, formerly known as Vodacom League.
