Lim 6th in SA games

Team Limpopo took part in 17 different sporting codes and managed to secure sixth place overall with 139 points.

ATHLETES from the province came home with a bag full of medals following great performances at the National Schools Sports Championships in Pretoria from December 10 to 15.

Team Limpopo took part in 17 different sporting codes and managed to secure sixth place overall with 139 points.

The team won 75 medals and managed to improve their standing from ninth place to sixth.

According to Veronica Choshane, department of sport, arts and culture recreation and sports manager, the province improved considerably compared to the previous championships.

“We won 53 medals during the previous championships and 75 this year. Our athletes were all committed and worked hard. They flew the Limpopo flag high. We are proud of them and wish them all the best in their future endeavours,” Choshane said.

She added that good performances were registered in swimming as the swimmers won 50 of the 75 medals.

Athletes who took part in the National Schools Sport Championship had the opportunity to win a ministerial bursary worth R100 000. This year the bursary went to two netball and two chess players, all four from Limpopo.

Choshane added that the school’s sports programme was launched in 2011 by the minister of sports and recreation, Fikile Mbalula, in conjunction with the minister of education, Angie Motshekga. The purpose of the championships was to reposition sport in schools.

“Since the start of of these school’s sports leagues in Limpopo, 1 150 schools out of 3 950 registered to participate in the programme,” Choshane said.
