League hots up in Vhembe

AS the race to claim top honours in the SAB Castle League in the Capricorn district reaches climax, teams in the Vhembe district are looking to topple log leaders, Ngwenani Young Chiefs.

LIMPOPO – AS the race to claim top honours in the SAB Castle League in the Capricorn district reaches climax, teams in the Vhembe district are looking to topple log leaders, Ngwenani Young Chiefs.

On Saturday, third placed team, Vhembe FET College FC narrowed the gap with a 2-0 win over Vondwe X1 Bullets at the Makwarela Stadium.

Ipfi Nemalili drew first blood for the hosts in the first half to take the 1-0 lead into half-time. The second half started with Vhembe FET College putting the visitors on the back foot, but tempers went wild when Bullets players almost charged the referee after he awarded a penalty to the home side.

Khathutshelo Tshidade missed the spot kick and it was his captain, Rebel Khambana, who saved his teammate’s blushes by scoring the assurance goal to make the game beyond reach for X1 Bullets.

Vhembe FET College has been on a three-match winning streak and their coach, Tshilidzi Budeli, said he believed it was just a matter of time before they overtook the log leaders and won the league to participate in the ABC Motsepe League.

Budeli said for a team that did not train, they were doing well, and that the players were motivated because the team had moved from bottom half of the log to position three.

“I have always believed that we have a good team that is capable of winning the league, but my worry is that in three weeks’ time, the college will close and the majority of the players will go home, which might leave us with a weaker team. We plan to have a camp during the college recess. This is our year and we will do all in our power to achieve our goal of making it to the play-offs,” Budeli said.
