City’s bowlers in titanic battles

Lawn bowlers in the province have been preparing for the inter-district bowls championships that started on Monday and will continue until Friday.

POLOKWANE – Lawn bowlers in the province have been preparing for the inter-district bowls championships that started on Monday and will continue until Friday.

The championship consists of three categories: A-side, B-side and senior side.

The A-side will play in Durban, the B-side in Pretoria and the senior side will battle it out in George. The inter-district championships are played by both men and women.

Christo van der Merwe, Pietersburg Bowling Club president, says they have been preparing for the championship for a long time and he believes that all the bowlers from Limpopo are ready to achieve their best results yet.

“Last year we did not do well in the championships, but I am sure we all learned from our mistakes.

“We are ready to face any team and show them how the game of bowls is meant to be played,” he says.

He adds that the inter-district bowls championships are one of the main tournaments of the year and they cannot afford to let it slip through their fingers.

Van der Merwe says the club’s A-side was made up of their best players including a 17-year-old boy who is committed and hard working.

“The national club champion-ships will take place in May, but this one is for individuals. Anyone can participate in these championships.

“That is why we usually do not take it too seriously, because it is not for clubs but individuals,” he explains.

He says the club needs more players so that they can excel in the national club championships.
