Provincial sport improves
Sport in the province seems to have improved, as indicated by a report released by the Limpopo Provincial Sports and Recreating Council (LPSRC) recently.
POLOKWANE – Sport in the province seems to have improved, as indicated by a report released by the Limpopo Provincial Sports and Recreating Council (LPSRC) recently.
Among other achievements mentioned in the report, the Limpopo Sports Academy was awarded with a national lottery compliance award for best complying academy in the country.
Abel Rakoma, LPSRC public relations officer, said archers from the province were on the candidate list for the Protea Archery team that would participate in the World Bow Hunter Championship to be held in Hungary in August.
“The final Protea team will be announced in June. Only 12 players will form part of the team and the rest will be eliminated. During the world championship held in South Africa in 2013, two of the candidates from Limpopo won gold medals and will defend their title this year,” Rakoma said.
He added that the archers were training hard. He wished them the best of luck and said he hoped their arrows would fly straight.
Limpopo will be sending 12 archers to the 2015 African Regional Field Archery Championship that will be held in Pretoria in June.
Three basketball players, Lesiba Makinta, Vutomi Ntsako and Josias Malahlela. were part of the national team that played in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe during the u/20 basketball championship.
The South African Football Association in Limpopo produced two players, Thendo Mukumela and Edwin Sikhwama, who are part of the national u/17 football squad that will represent the country at the u/17 Fifa Soccer World Cup to be played in Chile in October.
Other sports achievements:
• Aquatic – Best high school performance.
• Wrestling – Qualified for the national championships.
• Dance – Hip hop genre won in Croatia and some of the dancers are going to Romania.
• Equestrian – National champions, and some were selected to go to Germany.
• Physically disable athletes – won gold, silver and two bronze medals during the recent national championship.
• Limpopo athletics – won medals at national meeting.
• Softball – Will host the NPC event in 2016.
• Chess – To host Polokwane open later this year.
• Rugby – four players are in the SA u/20 team.
