Mini-cricket fest

The day was filled with action and excitement as pre-school children showcased their cricket skills on the greens during the second edition of the KFC Mini-Cricket Pre-schools Festival that was held at Genl Piet Joubert School on Saturday.

POLOKWANE – The day was filled with action and excitement as pre-school children showcased their cricket skills on the greens during the second edition of the KFC Mini-Cricket Pre-schools Festival that was held at Genl Piet Joubert School on Saturday.

All children aged between four and six years from various pre-schools in Polokwane participated in this prestigious festival that is sponsored by KFC Polokwane together with Limpopo Impala Cricket.

Some 489 children painted Genl Piet Joubert’s sports grounds red and white as they battled it out on the pitch. The day was made even better by the large number of parents who attended in support of their children.

Children received T-shirts and medals as tokens of appreciation for participating in the festival.

Cheray van Blerk, KFC Polokwane marketing manager, said the KFC Mini-Cricket Pre-Schools Festival gave all children, irrespective of their abilities, an opportunity to be involved in cricket. She added that the festival also provided physical exercise in an enjoyable form and developed self-confidence.

“This is one of KFC’s projects that gives back to the community by promoting an active lifestyle among young boys and girls. KFC Mini-Cricket has over 100 000 children actively participating in the programme throughout South Africa, with dedicated volunteer coaches sharing their passion for cricket by helping the youngsters get the most out of the game from an early age,” said explained.

Children attended coaching clinics where they were taught the basics of cricket such as batting and bowling, before heading to their respective stations for the main business of the day, which was playing a game of cricket.

Van Blerk thanked everyone who made the KFC Mini-Cricket Pre-Schools Festival a success and said the day was well spent.
