People with disabilities have fun in the sun
South Africa celebrated Disability Month from 3 November to 3 December, with Limpopo celebrating with a fun day in Polokwane
LIMPOPO – South Africa celebrated Disability Month from 3 November to 3 December, with Limpopo celebrating with a fun day in Polokwane recently.
The fun day, which was held for people with mental and physical disabilities, was the Department of Social Development’s way of ensuring they stayed active. All five districts competed in these games.
“We wanted to expose people living with disabilities to activities that promote their well-being and to empower and create confidence in them,” said Johanna Thabathi, an employee at the department.
The activities included a sack race, egg and spoon race and a bottle filling competition.
Thabathi further explained the importance of such events.
“We wanted to help them realise they can do anything they put their minds to. To know they can compete with others in their communities and show pride,” said Thabathi.
Some participants also took part in a fashion show where they were able to express their sense of style.
