Big turnout at Mayoral Golf Day

The number of golfers who entered the annual Mayoral Golf Day on Friday, 1 December exceeded expectations.

POLOKWANE – According to Municipal Spokesperson, Matshidiso Mothapo, they expected around 120 golfers at Polokwane Golf Club but instead 148 turned out for this year’s match.

The Mayoral Golf Day was started around five years ago as an initiative to raise money for a bursary fund for needy students in and around Polokwane.

Mothapo could not yet give the full tally of how much was raised by the golf day but said by the Friday morning the amount raised was already R1,2 million. The target of the event was R2 million.

He said aside from the money being utilised to help needy and deserving students, it is also invested in community based skills training programmes to benefit the economy and the business sector.

“On behalf of the Polokwane Municipality, we thank our main sponsor, Nedbank, as well as all the other local businesses who helped to make this golf day such a resounding success. Every donation helps to make a valuable difference towards the investment in skills training and education in Polokwane,” Mothapo said.

He added since the start of this initiative the pass rate of students who have benefitted from the bursary fund is 98%.
