Learn how to swim this holiday with Swimming SA

The free swimming holiday programme started on Monday 10 December and will end on Friday 21 December at the Polokwane Municipal swimming pool

POLOKWANE – Swimming South Africa (SA) is offering a free swimming holiday programme to anyone in Polokwane who is interested in learning how to swim. The free swimming holiday programme started on Monday 10 December and will end on  Friday 21 December at the Polokwane Municipal swimming pool, targets children and the community at large.

Oakwood Academy owner Jules Khomo felt it was crucially important for her school children to attend the lessons to prep the little ones for the holiday. “I myself was a swimmer when I was younger, so having that experience in water, I know the benefits. The benefits of the programme also would give the children an opportunity to take it further if they showed natural potential,” Jules said.

Coach Cirine Visage (Swimming South Africa) gives Skye Maupa and Levi Solomon some swimming lessons with pool noodles.

The programme included creating awareness regarding safety in and around the pool, keep children and communities occupied and out the streets during the holiday season, eradicated the source of drowning within communities.

Throughout the lessons, the Swimming SA team introduced splash polo sport to the swimmers, a fun element leading to the introduction of water polo; this is a competitive team sport that is played in the water between two teams that consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team’s goal.

One of Swimming SA’s coaches, John Mosime adds that the programme aims to also eradicate the myth around swimming being for ‘certain racial groups’ and also emphasising the fact that it is a life skill for all children. Towards the end of the programme, talented children were recognised and recommend to join the club development programme to soon represent South Africa.
