Lim Sports Awards to recognise and celebrate excellence in the province

Nominees for the Limpopo Sport and Recreation Awards 2019 were announced at a media launch which was held at The Ranch Hotel Club House on Tuesday.

POLOKWANE – The awards ceremony will take place at Meropa Casino and Entertainment World on 21 September and are aimed to recognise and celebrate athletes in the province.

The MEC of Sport, Thandi Moraka, says the department is more than ready to host these awarads and that people must be on the look-out for some interesting and exciting sport awards, which they have never experienced in the province.

“We focus our energy on delivering a memorable event to our prominent athletes who continuously make us proud as a province and as a country. The department has set aside R650 000 for the event and have reached out to prominent business people to come and meet us half way to help us create an event to recognise our people in a fitting manner.

“I will not hand over a cheque less than R15 000, because I want something which can help these athletes to be independent economically,” said Moraka.

The department aims to incentivise and applaud individual athletes, teams and administrators who continue to make our nation proud by displaying exceptional performance and attaining remarkable results,” she said.

She told BONUS that all the nominees are the heroes who have brought glory upon the department, who have performed great deeds for the department and those who continue to take the department to even greater heights.

Nchabeng Tsebe (Department of Sport, Head of department) with MEC Thandi Moraka.

“I believe that our sportsmen and women must see themselves as we see them, as a crucial component of our narrative of national progress. Your commitment to excellence in your respective codes and the maintenance of high standards must serve as a reminder to everyone in Limpopo and South Africa to work hard, to persevere and to strive to excel in all spheres of life,” she said.

She is certain that hosting these awards each year would help the department draw greater numbers of youth to sport. “This will be possible without any need for large investments on infrastructure, prepare these young people to participate in the Olympic codes and help in our struggle to build our national identity.

“We believe that our sportsmen and women should and can play a vital role in achieving our ideal of making sport accessible to all our people,” she said.
