Airforce reward their sporting best

Sportsmen and -women of the Airforce Base Makhado (AFB Makhado) were among the athletes recognised at the South African Air Force’s prestigious sport awards ceremony.

LIMPOPO – The awards were held at AFB Swartkop in Valhalla at the end of January. AFB Makhado did exceptionally well in the various sporting codes and this became apparent when they were awarded trophies and certificates of recognition. The base, as part of the SAAF Bases, participated at championships which were hosted by the SAAF throughout the year.

AFB Makhado is the home base of the fittest soldier and performed well in golf, squash, rugby, martial arts, athletics, angling and bowls. Several members were selected to be part of the Air Force team which participated at the Chief South African National Defence Force Prestige Sports week. AFB Makhado finished second.

Maj JQ van der Walt was announced as the sportsman of the year and the best golfer. Lt Col DM Wilson won the award for the most improved badminton player, Sgt Mathibela is the best SAAF walker and Amn TB Selogiloe was announced as the fittest SAAF female. Lt Col LI Montsho was given an award for 25 years of service, dedication and contribution to football.

AFB Makhado sports is managed by Maj S Tlhakuli, a South African triathlete, who strives to take the standard of AFB Makhado’s sports to the highest possible level.
