KFC offers young ones first taste of cricket
KFC Mini-Cricket is often children in the city's first taste of cricket.
POLOKWANE – This ‘finger lickin’ good’ experience allows both boys and girls to get acquainted with the basics of the game, which include fielding, batting and bowling.
Unleashing the potential of cricketers at a young age, 1 300 learners from 162 schools across Limpopo gathered at General Piet Joubert School on Saturday for a day of fun at the annual KFC Mini-Cricket festival.
The festival, in its 10th year, focuses on children discovering how it is to play sport with emphasis placed on the fun factor.
The Department of Education works closely with Cricket South Africa (CSA) to implement cricket in schools.
Limpopo Provincial Coordinator, Rejoice Phosa, told BONUS the festival is important since assists children from disadvantaged communities to participate in cricket too, and for their potential to be identified at an early age.
“There are 150 coaches from schools around the province present to assist us in identifying potential among the learners.
“Cricket South Africa usually asks for a minimum of 45 children but we get as many as possible because we cannot stop talent.
“Every child who shows potential deserves to be given the opportunity to be groomed and grow within the sport,” she said.
Also present at the festival was David Makopanele, the Mass Participation Manager for CSA, who expressed how much the festival has grown over the past 10 years with KFC’s sponsorship.
“KFC is a great sponsor, and even provides the players with kits. We are excited for the future. We could be grooming future Proteas players and who knows, the president might be one of these kids. We do not just teach them cricket, we equip them with social skills and discipline while keeping it fun.”
