POLOKWANE – Winnfield Stables hosted the National Barrel Horse Association (NBHA) Coca-Cola 3D barrel race event last Saturday and riders and their horses’ skills, abilities and ingenuity were tested.

Various riders participated in the competition which was dominated by girls. They competed in lead rein, peewee, youth, adults and senior open categories.

Riders were timed using three identical barrels set in a cloverleaf pattern where riders enter at the red line, circle around the first barrel, proceed to the second barrel and then continue on to the third barrel where they will complete the pattern and finally exit the course crossing the red line a second time. The aim is to determine who can finish the pattern the fastest and if a rider knocks a barrel over he receives no time.

Before the riders took on the barrel race, horses were properly prepared and after the race riders ensured that they have enough water to drink in order to cool down.
