Jan jets off to World Junior Baseball Tournament in the USA
Mankweng's Jan Matlou was selected to represent South Africa at the World Junior Baseball Tournament in the USA at a tournament in Cape Town in July.
POLOKWANE – Young baseball player from Mankweng Jan Matlou travelled to the United States of America on Tuesday where he will play in the World Junior Baseball Tournament.
The 17-year-old was selected at the national baseball tournament which took place in Cape Town in July while representing Limpopo.
His mom, Elizabeth, a street vendor said she is proud of her son’s achievements.
“He is the second born and I have always wanted him to be involved in sport to protect him from social ills. I introduced him to baseball when he was young, he was not eager to play at first, but with some motivation, he continued. I am happy that my efforts are bearing fruits. I want to see him prosper in the sport and achieve all the things that top sport stars do.”

She said she will continue to support her son’s baseball career.
” I want him to be successful and help improve our lives and his. I sell sweets, bunny chows and snacks at local schools.”
Jan started playing baseball at the age of seven on the dusty streets of Mankweng.
According to his mom, Jan was inspired by top baseball players nationally and internationally.
“When he was 12 years old he used to tell me that he dreams of wearing the green and gold jacket which is worn by players representing the country at the highest level. I was just fascinated by his vision and ambition. I am just happy that he is living his dream and I hope he reaps the rewards of his hard work.”
