Noordskool’s first team netball co-captains have big dreams

Bonolo Maleka and Ronewa Manganyi hope to captain their side to the nationals this year.

POLOKWANE – Laerskool Pietersburg Noord (Noordskool) first team netball coach Esmerelda Lambrechts says the role of a team captain is to lead, support, inspire and represent the rest of the team well, and play at a consistent level at all times.

Gr 7 learners Bonolo Maleka and Ronewa Manganyi were both given the responsibility to act as co-captains for the day during the primary netball and rugby day on Saturday.

Both have evident leadership traits as Bonolo is a school prefect, while Ronewa is the head girl.

Bonolo explains being a captain is hard work. “Captains should have the significant responsibility for strategy and teamwork while the game is in progress on the field. I enjoyed being acting captain because it kept me focused at all times.”

Ronewa says since the team captains haven’t been chosen as yet, she believes that being a team captain as well as a head girl is a big responsibility. “It’s important for everyone on the team to work together. I believe having a team captain is an important resource for the players in our team because it gives all the players a way to express their concerns or frustrations with a teammate before going directly to the coach,” she adds.

Bonolo explains she and Ronewa hope to captain the first team all the way to nationals this year.

Lambrechts adds: “I’m proud of the girls for playing a huge role on Saturday, representing the school as captains. Well done to the rest of the girls for being good team players during the game.”
