Yin Yang Karate grades karatekas for the second time

The karatekas were taught about the endurance of physical pain by being mentally strong.

POLOKWANE – The second grading for this year at the Yin-Yang Karate and Self Defense Studio, was held at Zurel College on Saturday.

All of the six karatekas passed the tests to new kyus (levels).

“Today’s grading is a tough one. It is about the phrase ‘mind over matter’ which is to say anyone is able to control a physical condition by using the mind. His ability to keep going even when he is tired is a simple question of mind over matter,” sensei Annatjie De Jager explained.

The karatekas were taught about the endurance of physical pain by being mentally strong.

Sensei Annatjie De Jager, Janice de Bruin and Richard Tiltman show off their moves during the grading.

“How to get there? Get hit, repeatedly, work your mind to be tough, try not to shy away and smile, smile a lot, smile all the time. Smiling you associate pain with something positive,” she explained.

Grading consisted of kihon-basics, kata, kumite, sanbon and gohon kumite, fitness and theoretical examinations. Karateka Lethabo Dikgale, who is a blue belt student, said she prescribed to the ideology and it has helped her become a better learner too.

The five other karatekas who graduated are Lwafika Nonjojo (blue), Richard Tiltman (blue), Hynek Potgieter (orange), Charlie Young (orange) and Janice de Bruin (yellow).

De Jager said more local and international competitions are in the pipeline.
