Blue number for Coach Lufuno after 10th Loskop marathon

Famously known in running circles as Coach Lufuno, Lufuno Mudau has an ethical character which is possibly one that needs to be celebrated more than the award itself, those close to him say.

POLOKWANE – The head coach of the Mzansi Athletics Club, Lufuno Mudau received his blue number for running 10 consecutive Loskop marathons on Saturday.

Lufuno started running around the year 2010 and ran his inaugural Loskop in 2012, the same year he ran and completed the Comrades Marathon as a novice. Since then, he has not looked back.

Richard Bilisi, the chairperson of the Mzansi Athletics Club said they are proud of Mudau’s success.

“It is credentials that earn one respect in various areas of life in the same way you are called a legend based on your track record. Credentials mean quality, points earned, achievements that you can show that you qualify to perform a particular task or deserve recognition. In politics, this concept is used to discredit those who ascend to positions of power without a noticeable track record of being in the trenches or demonstrate that someone deserves the deployment.”

He described Mudau as a legend and a true servant of athletics in the province.

“We are celebrating a giant baobab tree and a legend of long distance.”

Mudau designed, packaged and led a training programme which is currently used by the club to train and prepare novices and social runners to qualify for the Comrades Marathon.

The programme is dubbed ‘Couch to Comrades’ and prepares someone who has never moved to move and have confidence to run the ultimate race.

Among other accolades, Mudau boasts a Comrades green number which he received last year after completing his 10th Comrades and Kosmos 3 in one blue number.

Besides running, he is a die-hard Orlando Pirates fan.
