Northern Academy clinch provincial soccer title

Northern Academy's soccer team won the provincial Kay Motsepe tournament and earned a spot at nationals, where they'll compete for the R3m grand prize.

POLOKWANE – Northern Academy’s soccer team emerged victorious as the provincial champions of the Kay Motsepe Soccer Schools tournament, recently held at the school’s sports field.

Led by award-winning coach Hendrick Mukwevho, the team defeated Tshikota School 4-2 in the final, earning R150 000 in prize money and a floating trophy.

The team will represent the province at the national finals, scheduled for September 23-27, where they have a shot at winning the grand prize of R3m.

Mukwevho is confident in his team’s chances.

“This is our third time winning the provincial title in the Kay Motsepe tournament. We’re experienced and know what to expect at the nationals. We’ve studied the teams we’ll face and are well-prepared. With strong support from the school’s management, we will ensure the team is ready.”

Chris van Rensburg, executive head of Northern Academy, expressed pride in the team’s achievement and extended his best wishes for the national competition.

Team captain Thabo Malatji acknowledged the tough competition ahead, but says he is optimistic.

“We’re ready to take on the best schools from other provinces. For many of our players, it’s their first time at national level, but we’re determined to prove ourselves. We promise to bring the title back to Northern Academy.”

The team also includes standout player Thato Mpati, a Gr 11 student who currently plays for Premier Soccer League side Magezi Football Club.

“I’m excited to be part of the team. This won’t be my first national tournament as I’ve played in Spain and for the Wits development team. I understand the demands of these competitions, and I’m ready to help Northern Academy bring home the national title,” said Mpati.
