Wik Triathlon delivers grit and glory at Stanford Lake

The Wik Triathlon at Stanford Lake College showcased endurance, teamwork and community spirit in swimming, cycling and running events.

POLOKWANE – The annual Wik Memorial Triathlon took place at Stanford Lake College on March 15.

The event has become one of the must-do-events in the area with deep roots in the community, drawing outsiders as well as residents to take part.

Swim, bike, run: Athletes hit Stanford Lake

The event consisted of three main races, the Stanfordian, the Wik individual and the Wik team relay.

The Stanfordian is the big one, and consists of a 1km swim, 23km mountain bike ride, and a 10km run.

This could only be done individually.

The Wik individual consisted of a 500m swim, 15km mountain bike ride, and a 5km run.

The Wik team relay covered the same route as the WIK individual, but teams of three participated in relay style, with each participant doing a discipline.

Stanford Lake College was also represented on the day by staff, learners, and parents participating.

Some top results were “old-boy” Kyle Burelli taking fourth place in the Stanfordian.

In the WIK team relay, Boden Cornish, Inbar Cohen and Yoshka McMillan took first place in the junior mixed category.

Other SLC participants included Tatenda Mabayah in the WIK individual (ninth overall) and Shane Friedrichs in the Wik team relay, and Matthew Scriven (fourth junior) and Judah Leher (sixth junior) in the Wik individual event.

SLC director of marketing and communications, Caryn Rathmann, says it was a great day for Stanford Lake College.

“We are thankful to all our supporters. Of course the event would not be possible without our sponsors, PPS Petroleum, Trophy Toyota, Dust Suppressions and Miami Canners.

“Thank you very much to them for making this day possible.

“Thank you to all the staff that stood in the rain to marshal and all the pupils that helped out on the route as well. The day was a great success with a good turnout and many happy participants.“

Maretha Swanepoel

My name is Maretha Swanepoel and I have worked at the Polokwane Review since 2012. The decision to become a journalist came at 04:00 one Friday morning while watching news of bombings in Afghanistan and I realised I wanted to be there. Some years later, I decided to rather stay in South Africa and join the industry due to my love for writing and curiosity. Even though I can write all beats, I love human interest and community news with some schools added to the mix. Telling someone’s story and using my camera to make memories is a privilege. My interests include animals (especially dogs) and mental health. I like to spend my time with my dogs and a good book. My family is important and takes second place in my heart. God is always first.
