Mall of the North race draws hundreds of runners

Hundreds of runners from as young as nine took part in Mall of the North's annual Comrades Marathon qualifier in Polokwane.

POLOKWANE – Mall of the North (MotN) successfully hosted their annual official Comrades Marathon qualifier on Sunday.

Participants ranging from as young as nine years old took part, running and walking across the 5km, 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km races.

42.2km participants from different athletics clubs start the race.

The routes took runners through the Mitchell House and Flora Park areas, and back, as they completed their respective distances.

MotN marketing manager, Mari Delport welcomed the familiar face of MotN marathon, Nakedi Ramaphakela who also formed part of the race.

Polokwane Athletics Club (PAC) chairperson Thabana Mokgohloa outlined some house rules and directed participants as the commentator.

10km runners Maditsi Refiloe and Maja Precious arrive at the event.

The Premier, Dr Phophi Ramathuba also attended the event, not only as a dignitary but as a participant, completing the 10km race and also encouraged runners about the importance of health and fitness.

The marathon attracted a strong turnout and served as a key qualifying event for runners aiming to secure a place in the Comrades Marathon, while also promoting fitness and community participation in the city.

Women are geared and ready to participate in the 5km race.

The Mall of the North team thanked all participants for contributing to the success of the event.

“Thank you to each and every participant who entered under the various categories of the marathon, you’ve all done exceptionally well. See you all at the next marathon.”

  2. Ananius Masila from PAC – 02:38:29.
  3. Mosimanegape Bonnetsoe from Siyanda Bakgatla Running Club – 02:38:47.

Overall 42.2km – women

  1. Rosaline Isaiah (Kenya) – 03:13:57.
  2. Kwena Mathekga from PAC – 03:43:35.
  3. Channelle van Wyk from Fat Cats Athletics Club CG – 03:47:42.

Overall 21.1km – men

  1. Alex Aphane from Nedbank Running Club Lima – 01:10:25.
  2. Thabiso Madigage from Samancor Chrome Marathon Club – 01:16:33.
  3. Steven Masinge from Malamulele Athletics Club – 01:17:44.

Overall 21.1km – women

  1. Mphumelelo Lucent from Nkowankowa Athletics Club – 01:42:11.
  2. Thato Motsatsi from Nkowankowa Athletics Club – 01:43:33.
  3. Karin van Amstel – 01:46:04.

Overall 10km – men

  1. Tebogo Pulusa from Dwarsrivier Athletics Club – 32:52.
  2. Mothopi Malatji from Unisa Athletics Club – 33:44.
  3. Lutendo Mapoto from PMC Athletics Club – 34:22.
