POLOKWANE – The Capricorn District Basketball Association officially launched the Capricorn District Junior Basketball League on Saturday in Polokwane, marking a major milestone for youth basketball development in the region.

More than 140 young players gathered for the opening event. The league features age groups from u/12 – u/18 boys and girls, drawing talented youngsters from across the district.

Organisers, consisting of basketball coaches, stressed that the initiative goes beyond basketball.

“This league is about empowering youth, building discipline, and creating opportunities for the future,” said one of the organisers, Cecil Nkhwashu, the founder of the Elite Basketball programme.

The association also used the launch to call on potential sponsors and partners to support the league’s growth.

“Many of the participating teams currently face challenges, including a lack of proper gear and equipment. We have the talent and the passion, but we need support to fully equip these young players.

My name is Anne Mametja. I am a mom of four and an identical twin. With a passion for media, I graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Television Production in 2012 and due to my love for children, I also hold a certificate in Nursing Auxiliary. As media is my first love, I started working at the Polokwane Review as a journalist in 2017 and it has been amazing thus far. I love journalism because I can be a voice to the community through my work. Journalism allows me to meet different people at the events I attend. Although there are certain beats that journalists stick to, being an all-rounder means I write community, schools, sports, hard, lifestyle and entertainment news. It also allows me to be versatile in the newsroom and assist where I can. ‘Journalism can never be silent, that is its greatest virtue and its greatest fault.’
