THE young people in Avon village near Bochum say they are not going to sit around and wait for something to happen, but are going to start embracing and celebrating their talent.
Nicolas Mothebo, co-founder of the Rise and Shine dance group, says some of the village’s young people decided to start a dance group to develop their talent, to stay busy and to keep away from bad influences.
The group specialises in the cha-cha, romantic dances, the samba and the jive.
Collen Sekwat says joining the group changed his life. “I used to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes. I was not a good son to my family. Now I am a good example to others in my community,” he says.
Sekwati says support from their parents and the community would make a huge difference in morale and will encourage members to work harder.
Rise and Shine performs at weddings, parties and graduation ceremonies free of charge.
Koketso Maoto, a local resident, says he is very happy to see young people from his community develop their talent.
“I wish all young people could learn from these youngsters. They do it for themselves without asking for any hand-outs.”
Ratapa Baby says Rise and Shine’s greatest wish is to film a DVD and to have their own space to rehearse in.
They use a community hall and have to skip practise sessions when someone else wants to use the hall.
