Happily ever Active in this BMW Tourer
BMW introduced its first front wheel drive model, the new 2 Series Active Tourer, recently.
POLOKWANE – BMW introduced its first front wheel drive model, the new 2 Series Active Tourer, recently.
The four models in this range released for the South African market are the 218i Active Tourer, 220i Active Tourer, 220d Active Tourer and the 225i Active Tourer. These models are now available at BMW Modern Autohaus at Motorcity, N1 North, Polokwane
Review took the 218i Active Tourer with the Luxury Line package for a test drive to experience BMW’s “first modern front wheel drive concept”.
The 218i lived up to BMW’s promises of active driving expectations combined with steering convenience. Its front axle had been engineered for the best possible driving dynamics and precision steering performance.
BMW designed this front wheel drive concept as compact as possible.
The engines of the 2 Series Active Tourer model range were all integrated at a 90-degree angle. The result is that the engine does not take up an inch of the interior’s ample space.
Optional features like BMW’s Performance Control, variable sport steering, dynamic damper control and Driving Experience Control all contributed in the dynamics and handling of the 218i.
Driving Experience Control allowed the driver to change the mode of the engine and transmission settings easily. Review chose the sport mode for a more dynamic driving experience instead of the comfort mode, the standard setting, or the Eco Pro mode for better efficiency.
The sport mode made this three-cylinder engine, also a first for BMW, more lively and responsive.
The 218i Active Tourer was fitted with a smooth shifting six-speed automatic steptronic gearbox.
The Luxury Line featured a high-gloss chrome grille and special 18-inch alloy wheels, as well as a leather-wrapped sport steering wheel, special seat upholstery and chrome accents.
The new three-cylinder engine made use of BMW’s new TwinPower Turbo technology, a concept used in all BMW petrol engines.
This engine comes with innovative turbocharger technology combined with high precision fuel injection and a variable valvetronic control system that helps to improve performance and responsiveness even at low speeds.
The technology also ensured reduced fuel consumption, which naturally leads to lower gas emissions.
The 218i Active Tourer produces an impressive growl and the overall ride impressed with BMW dynamic suspension, interior and seating comfort.
The instrument layout was typical of BMW, easy to read and accessible.
On a hot simmering afternoon, the air conditioning effortlessly kept occupants cool. The cabin also showed no signs of wind noise.
BMW 218i Active Tourer 1,5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine offers 100kW, 220Nm (230Nm with overboost).
Acceleration is from 0 to 100km/h in 9,6 seconds with a top speed of 200km/h. The EU fuel consumption is 4,9 l per 100km and CO² emmissions 115 g/km.
The new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is available at BMW Modern Autohaus.
