POLOKWANE – “THOBELA FM prides itself as a modern Northern Sotho station and custodian that represents its cultural diversity by presenting its rich heritage through information, education, and entertainment for current future generations,” said the station manager, Moshongwa Matsena.
Matsena spoke during the station’s 55th anniversary celebration at the SABC park on Monday.
She said Thobela FM was one of the oldest radio stations at the SABC and was launched as Radio Bantu on June 1, 1960.
“The station will keep growing further and further. We are really excited about the celebration. The station has increased its audience in the last year and will have competitions on air where listeners can win daily prizes. At the end of June, one lucky listener will walk away with R55 000. This is a way of appreciating and thanking our listeners,” said Matsena.
“Our target audiences are Northern Sotho speaking listeners and those who understand the language. The station has a listenership of over 3 million in Limpopo, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga and some parts of North West. We are working hard to build the station,” she said.
SABC spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago said celebrating 55 years meant the SABC did a great job.
“It’s a clear indication that we are going right. It means we are confident in what we do. We want to thank the listeners for being loyal to us for the past 55 years. The station has grown not only in numbers, but also in the market price, we are the leading SABC radio station in Limpopo. We also encourage listerners to continue to listern Thobela FM becuase it’s their staion,” said Kganyago.
