POLOKWANE – Family, food, presents. These are the three words most people use to sum up Christmas Day.
Young people in Polokwane share how they celebrate Christmas and what they do on Christmas Day.
Kayla Janse van Vuuren celebrates Christmas by spending time with her entire family. She says her family has a big dinner on Christmas evening, but before that, all the children swim and the women in her family sit and chat.
“In the afternoon, my grandfather dresses up as Father Christmas and gives all the children their presents.”
She says what is important is that her family give thanks to God.

Sharon Oliver says she starts off her Christmas Day by going to church in the morning. After church, she helps to prepare a feast for lunch, which she enjoys with her whole family.
“Christmas Day is about being with family. Family time is the most important.”
She says all the presents can be found under the Christmas tree.

Marilené van der Bergh celebrates Christmas in Parys with her entire family.
“My father dresses up as Father Christmas and gives everyone their presents.”
She says her family also goes to church in the morning to give praise to God.

Rozani Maree spends Christmas Day with her family, where they celebrate the day together and give each other presents to show appreciation for one another.

Mahlatse Maloma says she will be at home with her family on Christmas Day.
“As we are all girls in the house, we share the duties on Christmas Day, so this year, I will be the one braaing.”
She says they relax at home by setting up camping chairs in the back yard and have a good time.

Kosie Viviers says he spends Christmas Day with his family at his grandmother’s house.
“We have a braai or we have a big seafood lunch which brings everyone together.”
His family is not big on gifts, but rather on spending quality time together and they usually go to a family resort for Christmas.
