Gogo still leads healthy and busy lifestyle at 104

Although she's 104 years old, gogo Tebogo Mphago is still going strong

POLOKWANE – She can still read, smiles a lot and believes she still has at least 16 years of living to do.

Mphago is from Mankweng Zone 1 and turned 104 last Thursday. A birthday celebration was organised by Miss Limpopo 2014, Kholofelo Lekganyane.

Many gifts, including several cakes, arrived at her home for the celebration, where family, friends and church members gathered to celebrate with her.

She shared the secret of her long life.

Respect for one’s elders is one of the things that will ensure a long, happy life. When I was young I obeyed my parents and everyone’s rules. I gave my life to Jesus Christ, knowing that He’s the only one who can ensure I have a long and fruitful life.

Mphago added that living a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise also plays a big role in her life. “For relaxation I love watching TV and reading magazines.”

She is blessed with seven children and has 58 grand- and great-grandchildren.

Her daughter, Regina Mphago (76), said they are happy their mother is still with them.

“Even though she’s old, we believe she will still be with us for a good number of years. We still expect to learn more from her. She loves eating traditional foods and I think that is what keeps her strong and healthy,” she said.

Mphago’s grandson, Godfrey (43), said he loves his grandmother and he wishes her a good life until the very end. “There is nothing my grandmother loves to discuss more than God. She believes in Jesus and she loves to see everyone in her family going to church every Sunday,” he said.

Lekganyane’s advice to youngsters who want to live a long and happy life is to not use drugs or alcohol and take part in sport.

“We have witnessed that nothing is impossible in life. Gogo Mphago has set a good example for us and we thank God for giving her to us,” she said.
