Ndzali rides the airwaves one slot at a time

Late night listeners of Giyani Community Radio's Soulful Night show from 00:00 to 03:00 are kept company by Ndzalama "DJ Ndzali" Bee Mabasa

LIMPOPO – Born and bred in Mahonisi outside Giyani, the radio personality discovered his dream to become a radio presenter when he received the opportunity to act in a radio drama on Mala FM.

“I didn’t know that I could present until I received an opportunity to act in a Mala FM drama in 2012 and one of my co-actors suggested that I should pursue a career as a radio presenter because I had a beautiful voice and he believed I could be one of the best radio presenters in Mzansi one day,” Mabasa explains.

“In 2013 I heard about auditions at Giyani Community Radio (GCR) and decided to take the chance. They told me I got the job and should come for training and that is how my career as a radio presenter began.”

Mabasa is the smooth-voiced presenter of the Soulful Night show on GCR which is aired from 00:00 to 03:00 Mondays to Thursdays where he plays romantic music and ballads. His show focuses on motivating and connecting lovers though music.

He previously hosted Local Play, a show focused on old school music, and Ndzima ya Vutomi, an educational show that encouraged and helped students by hosting professionals and academics who callers could ask for advice.

Mabasa only holds a Gr 12 certificate from George Sonto High School in Mahonisi, but he plans to enroll for a radio and media studies course next year and sees himself working for a national broadcast station one day.

“I decided to further my studies next year because I realised it is hard to make it to the top without education to back you up.”

Mabasa says Sydney Baloyi from Munghana Lonene FM, a Xitsonga national broadcaster, is his role model. Aside from working at the radio station during the week, Mabasa is often invited to MC at social events in the community.

GCR station manager, Prenorman Chabane, describes Mabasa as someone who is disciplined, hard-working, dedicated, and determined to reach his dreams.

“Ndzali Bee is a talented and passionate presenter and I see big things for his future. He is a definite asset to the GCR family,” says Chabane.
