Hairdresser by day and club DJ by night

Johnny Phaloane of Seshego Zone 3 is a shining example of self-empowerment and entrepreneurship

POLOKWANE – He is a hairdresser by day and a club DJ who entertains party-goers by night.

Pholoane is the owner and founder of the Proficient Hair Salon in Seshego Zone 3, the salon specialises in natural hair.

“I discovered my passion for hair in 1999 when I visited several salons to see their techniques and experience the whole process myself. I soon realised I have a talent and skill for styling hair and decided to open my own salon as I was tired of looking to others to find employment or to assist me. It is not easy to make a success of a hair salon because there are many salons in the area and that makes the competition tough. The key is to be passionate about what you do and to be patient when things are going a bit rough,” Pholoane said.

His dream is to one day own a large salon franchise and employ several people.

“I am proud to be the runner up of last year’s Easy Waves Can’t Touch This roadshow which was held at Seshego Circle Centre. I have regular clients who come in every month and I always strive to live up to my promise to make everyone look beautiful when they walk out of my salon. My wish is to open a school which offers hair and cosmetic training and to revive hairdressing as a lucrative profession in the province,” he said.

He encouraged the youth to become entrepreneurs so they can be in charge of their own financial success and their futures and to not look to government or others for employment. “The only way we can improve our lives is by working hard and taking the initiative. If you have the opportunity to become financially independent and create jobs in the process, seize it.”
