Herold makes his mark

To permanently etch something important on a special item is a delicate form of art in its own way

POLOKWANE – Attention to detail, accuracy and on point measurements are the key attributes of someone who wants to make a career as an engraver.

Review Bonus spoke to Herold Sethosa, the man responsible for all the engravings at Gift and Jewellery Centre on the corner of Landdros Maré and Jorissen Streets in Polokwane.

“In this line of work you must have good listening skills and be a people’s person. You must be able to carefully listen and follow the client’s instruction and when you are back in your workshop behind your machine, you must be able to apply accurate measurements to engrave the artwork or message the client wants,” Herold says.

Not only does he do all the engraving at the shop, he helps to design and build trophies on special order or to sell in the shop.

“When I started at Gift and Jewellery Centre, I only worked three days a week and was a cleaner and helped to carry clients’ goods to their vehicles. Management approached me last year and asked if I was interested in developing myself within the company and I said yes. That is when I was trained in engraving and other skills development. I live with my mother and I am the only breadwinner, so I was elated at the opportunity to learn how to do engraving all while being able to put food on the table for my family. I enjoy every moment of my work and that motivates me to always deliver my best,” Herold explains.

Asad Kaka, manager at Gift and Jewellery Centre, says Herold is a fast learner and is very talented, and he is glad they had the opportunity to help him discover and develop his passion for engraving.
