Mahlatze defines his style in a suit

AFRO pop singer, Mahlatze Vokal Matji, talks to BONUS about fashion and his unique style.

POLOKWANE – He says although he does not really have a specific style, he loves fitted suits because he admires the sophisticated image and class they create.

“A black suit, white shirt and black shoes are always a winner, regardless of the occasion. In that ensemble you cannot go unnoticed and you will turn heads and be the centre of attention in the best possible way,” he explains. The Seshego born member of the Muzo Brothers duo says formal attire has the power to level individuals as equals, regardless of their financial or personal backgrounds.

He normally accessorises his suit with a brightly coloured pocket kerchief to add a more playful feature and allow the uniqueness of the outfit show.

“I love accessories, every outfit needs at least one, sometimes even more. I’m a big collector of scarves, sunglasses, watches, belts and hats among other things.” Mathatze says it is the smaller details which brings an ensemble together. He says the shoes and belt must always be on point as people are most likely to notice them first as soon as you walk into a room. Mahlatze says his look is straightforward and he considers comfort and cleanliness as essential elements.

“I always keep up with the trends, I’m definitely not afraid to try out new things and colour patterns. The clothes I wear define me as a brand and fashion plays a significant role for me as an entertainer.”

When he is not wearing a suit, he prefers a fitted shirt and fitted jeans.

The Lerato singer is currently working on his first album as a solo artist. “The album will be titled I do music “Dikosha” and is due for release in mid September. It’s a mix of love songs with a touch of Sepedi traditional soul,” he elaborates.

The ever stylish vocalist has been nominated for the upcoming Film Arts Music and Entertainment (FAME) South Africa Awards in the Best Styled Personality category. To vote for him, SMS 42 to 47052. SMS’s cost R1,50.
