Sepedi rapper wows with words
Hip-hop artist Vicky Vic Mash Maboya is taking the music industry by storm with his elite Sepedi rapping skills.
POLOKWANE – The 35-year-old from Seshego started rapping in 1996. In 2001 Vic Mash moved to Pretoria and released his hit single, I will go ahead, which rocked the streets of Seshego.
Later on in 2004 he decided to change the game by changing the language he rapped in from English to Sepedi.
“In 2004 towards the end of the year I formed a group, Mphato, with Sunny and Skwati. I worked with DJ Nate from drag records and produced an album for Mphato called Kasi flava, and soon the album was making waves on Thobela FM and in the streets of Seshego. That’s when I discovered my talent for rapping in Sepedi. In 2011 I entered the Arts and Culture I CAN SING Limpopo district competition where I emerged as the overall winner,” he said.
He then collaborated with the award winner for the King of Limpopo Hip Hop Awards, SpaceMunna, on the track Ayeye.
“We made a music video for the track as part of the Space Munna mix tape that won the Limpopo Hip-hop Awards. The video is on YouTube with the song rocking the airwaves via Thobela FM and most community radio stations. I am currently working on my brand, Merchandise, and in the studio recording my new album. My album is produced by an international producer from Nigeria, Anthony Buoro TY Omoh. I once shared the stage with K.O., Teargas, Khuli Chana, Pro Kid, Red Button, Bricks, 5FM DJs, and DJ Fresh,” he said.
