TALKING CARS: Cortez shares his passion for life
BONUS had the opportunity to talk to him about his ride, a Volkswagen (VW) Golf Life 1.6i.
POLOKWANE – Conroe Cortez Ross is the president of Westenburg V-Dub Crew whose motto in life is: “Nothing comes easy. If you want something, you’ve got to work for it”.
Q. When did you buy your latest toy?
A. About three months ago.
Q. What was the price tag?
A. I bought it for R30 000.
Q. What are some of the features that stand out and you appreciate most about the car?
A. The best is definitely the interior, the BMW M3 German spec mags and angel eye headlights mostly. However, I appreciate the car as a whole.
Q. What’s the highest speed you ever did with this car?
A. 120 km/h.
Q. Do you have a nickname for your car?
A. No, I don’t.
Q. How much does it cost to fill up the tank?
A. Not more than R700.
Q. How far have you driven this car?
A. As I only bought it recently, I haven’t had the opportunity to drive it far. The farthest is to Tzaneen.
Q. How much does it cost for a major service?
A. I would say less than R1 000.
Q. What do you wish to drive after this one?
A. I don’t know yet.
For now I am content with the cars I have. If I had to choose one I’d say a VW Golf 5 GTi.
Q. When did you decide to pimp your ride and why?
A. The day I bought it I started pimping it. A VW Golf has a fresh look if you put some mags on and drop it a bit.
Q. Where did you pimp it?
A. I did it locally as I have friends who specialise in the trade.
Q. What did you change on the car and why?
A. I got a new coat of paint, changed the mags, lights and interior, and added a sound system.
Q. How long did it take you to complete the pimping on your car?
A. Less than a month.
Q. How much did you spend on pimping your ride and do you think it was worth it? Why?
A. If I were to guess I’d say more than R20 000 because I wasn’t really keeping track considering what I’ve done on it. I would say it was definitely worth it because if you want the best for your car, you have to pay for it.
Q. What advice do you have for motorists who also want to pimp their cars?
A. If you pimp it, do it the right way.
Skip the short cut of doing it cheaply and do it right the first time, because if you don’t you’ll end up paying double when you decide to pimp it properly.
Q. How often do you drive your vehicle?
A. I try my best to drive it at least three to five times a week.
Q. Do you have any other cars you plan on pimping?
A. Yes I do, I have a 1981 VW Golf and a 2008 VW Polo GTi.
Q. Have you modified the engine, and if yes, what did you do?
A. Not yet, it is still a standard 1.6i.
