Traditional treats for everyone’s taste buds

Seshego-based aspiring chef dishes on South Africa's most loved traditional meals

POLOKWANE – Aspiring chef, Lizzy Mudau, dishes on her favourite traditional meals and shares why she believes it is important to keep cooking them. She makes an array of South African specialities including potjiekos, giblets, morogo, mogodu, samp, mopane worms and many more.

She says traditional food is popular in many households because it is familiar, tastes great and serves as a way of preserving our rich heritage. She adds that a lot of people try traditional meals to get a sense of other cultures.

The Seshego-based entrepreneur who is in the process of registering a catering company, says mogudu remains a favourite among different cultures.

“I usually cater for events such as parties, weddings, family gatherings as well as corporate events. People always take second helpings of my mogudu,” she tells BONUS. She says she is happy to see more people trying traditional dishes as it can only help her business grow.

The 26-year-old says she is passionate about food and loves what she does. Aside from compromising my sleep by having to wake up early and going to sleep very late in order to prepare for the next day, I wouldn’t trade my career for anything.”

Lizzy also reveals that mopane worms have become quite popular and her customers usually request them. “Many of my customers prefer them as a snack while others prefer them with pap.” According to Lizzy, most of the food she makes are in many households across the country.
