Soul Kulture already making waves in music industry

Soul Kulture recently visited Polokwane, the City of Stars, to promote their debut album, Nge liny' ilanga (Some Day)

POLOKWANE – Growing up in a small village in the Eastern Cape, Afeletsi Manamathela and Msekeli Velaphi of Soul Kulture always knew the Afro soul music industry is where their passion lay.

Afeletsi (19) and Msekeli (21) wowed music critics and fans alike with their dexterity on the guitar and their remarkable vocals.

The album, released under the label Open Mic Production in mid-August, is already making waves on radio stations countrywide.

The two met in the Eastern Cape town of Idutywa in 2013 with Alefetsi drawn to the melodic sounds from Msekeli’s guitar, a fellow busker, while walking about.

Their dream is to make a success of their music career and subsequently being able to move their families into decent houses.

The 14-track album includes hits such as Sikulila, Made in your Image, Ndizokuphalala, Hold my hand ft Lionel Siwela, I was in love, Hlala nam, Tell you something ft Birthmark, Always on my mind, S’phalaphala, and Mama.

They both grew up being inspired by the likes of famous artists such as Ringo Madlingosi and Ntando.

Both Afeletsi and Msekeli discovered their love for singing at a young age. “Being born in a musical family, I grew up loving music and singing. Msekeli and I formed Soul Kulture in 2013 and have been together ever since.

I was passing by Msekeli’s house when I heard him playing guitar. The music was so hypnotic that it drew me to him and soon after our first meeting, we started performing together,” Afeletsi explained.

“We identify our music as Afro-costic soul, being influenced by the likes of Ringo and Ntando and, most recently, The Soil. Their songs have been our motivation to get-up-and-go as we tackle the daily struggles of survival and making the most of what life has offered us,” Msekeli said.
