Kenneth turns criticism into hit songs

Award-winning house music DJ, Kenneth Thabo Molewa (21), discovered his passion for music when he took a gap year after matric.

POLOKWANE – The young musician and producer originally hails from Ga-Sekgopo and currently resides in Polokwane. He attended Greenside Primary School and proceeded to Kabelo High School and Mohumi High School where he matriculated in 2017.

“I started DJing in 2011 and after I mastered my work in beats and composing, I ventured into producing,” he said. On stage and in studio, Thabo works with about 10 local artists who he produces and DJs for.

Throughout his music career, Thabo performed at events in Ga-Collen, Mamolatelo Bar Lounge, Mavis Tavern and the Sekgopo Community Awards where he was nominated for and won the best house music award 2017.

“Being a DJ, artist and producer is challenging because there’s a lot of competition among artists who want to be on the top of the charts. One thing I always tell myself and my friends is that one should never give up when you have a passion for something.”

He added being in the music industry is challenging as people will criticise your work to put you down. He, however, takes these criticisms as motivation to work even harder.

“To handle the situation, you just have to be yourself. Don’t allow earthly attachments to kill what you love; you just have to be you and do it for the love of music,” he advised.

Thabo explained he loves being in the music industry because he is able to use it as a platform to influence people’s lives through his work.

“For instance, some people are depressed and stressed, and when they hear your music, they feel better; it doesn’t matter where they are.”
