Achieve the right look this winter by playing around with different jerseys

POLOWKANE – Jerseys or sweaters or whatever you call them will always be popular. Not only do they keep us warm, but they can be played around with to achieve the right look.

To help us understand, a jersey is an item of knitted clothing (traditionally in wool or cotton) that you pull over your head as it does not open in front, unlike a cardigan. Bonus spoke to Jerry Pitja, a stylist, fashion advisor, style blogger and owner of Da Elegency Boutique who shared advice on the different types of jerseys:

Crew neck

It’s probably the most anodyne of all styles of sweaters; as a result it is also the most versatile style of sweater. It can be worn with just about anything, casually over a shirt or even with a suit or check blazer.

Roll neck

The style was originally created as an undergarment for ye olde Knights. It is an eminently wintery one of course, and effectively has a built-in scarf.

V – neck jumper

Loved by golfers and the wilfully middle-aged. The sweater is however, not one of the more versatile of styles around and in fairness, does originate from golf attire.

Sleeveless cardigan

Used by most men who like formal wear. Usually dressed alone or with a jacket.

The jersey dress

This can be worn on those cold and lazy days. It’s a jersey and dress in one. It’s easy to dress up or down, however you are feeling on the day.

Do

• Store sweaters neatly folded rather than hanging.

• Minimise how often you wash your sweaters; the less the better.

• Wash your sweaters according to the instructions on the label, but make sure to dry them flat and not in the dryer.

Don’t

• Wear “itchy” materials such as wool; simply plan to wear them with a shirt underneath.

• Wear a zip–up sweater with casual outfits; reserve them for golf and sports.

• Pull or clip loose threads, as you might unwind part of your sweater; try to pull the loose thread through the back side of the sweater.

• Wear a visible T-shirt underneath your sweater, it cheapens the look.

• Toss pilling sweaters; some pilling is unavoidable so get a clothes’ razor or sweater stone to make your sweaters look like new again.
