‘Lekkersweet’ encourages aspiring musicians to see the beauty in all music

Limpopo – Winner of the Best Hip Hop Artist at the 2016 Film, Arts, Music and Entertainment (FAME) awards, Sammy Nthoje began rapping at the age of 13 by imitating other rappers.

He officially released his first mixtape in 2011 and is considered the pioneer of KheloRap (‘Khelobedu Rap’ representing Balobedu). Sammy’s mixtape, Khwabadhedja was nominated for the Best Vernacular Hip Hop Category at the South African Traditional Music Achievers and his album, Fukutja won him his FAME award.

His hit singles include Khwabadhedja, Molobedu wa Swagger, Fukutja, Ne re botshela, Hit Harder, Summer Time, Reason to celebrate and Thathareha. “If you want to be a successful musician or artist, it starts with the music you listen to. Sometimes, society can train us to lower our expectations by convincing us mediocrity is acceptable, it is not. Excellence is at your fingertips, and it simply needs to be understood and observed. Make sure that you study carefully from music professions who are well versed in music theory and music appreciation, also study those who are successful in music and what they have done,” he advised.

He added that aspiring musicians should listen to all genres and try to see the beauty in all music, despite their personal preferences. “The foundation you lay now with your acceptance and understanding of these basic essentials will define who you will be in your own music career,” he said.

Besides his skills behind the microphone, Sammy also produces adverts, promos and jingles for online and local radio stations under Bambzela Entertainment. Sammy has also had his turn on South African screens as a supporting actor in dramas such as Giyani Land of Blood, Isibaya and The River.
