The Democratic Alliance (DA) Limpopo has approached Premier Stan Mathabatha to have the Vhembe District declared a disaster area with immediate effect after heavy downpours reportedly destroyed several houses, roads and bridges.
In a statement issued this morning (Friday), DA Limpopo Premier candidate Jacques Smalle said the party had written to Mathabatha today. He indicated the affected villages to be including Masisi, Thohoyandou, Madimbo, Tshilamba and Folovhodwe. This disaster has hampered the ability of residents to get to work and to school, it was learnt.
“The DA believes that this calamity could have been avoided had Premier Mathabatha prioritised service delivery and the maintenance of infrastructure like storm water drains instead of focusing on the ANC’s internal squabbles and self-enriching exercises.
“Once declared a disaster, additional finances may be allocated to this area to provide emergency relief to the affected villages by upgrading some of the damaged infrastructure so that life can go back to normal.
“The DA urges Premier Mathabatha and his administration to engage all relevant stakeholders to craft an impactful strategy to bring relief to the residents of Vhembe and further dispatch a team to assess the damage.”
Smalle concluded stating that the DA in Limpopo would continue to push for emergency aid and ensure that funds made available reached those most in need and build one South Africa for all.
