The case in which six learners are accused of the alleged murder of Thorisho Themane (28) in Flora Park on the weekend, was earlier this afternoon (Thursday) postponed by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court to next week.
Scores of people who gathered in front of the court since early morning had to remain outside as no-one allowed to inside the court room. It was learnt that the case was heard in camera and that only the suspects’ parents and legal representatives were allowed.
The media was also excluded from the court procedure and only addressed by MEC for Transport and Community Safety Makoma Makhurupetje after the postponement.
She said that the case was postponed for seven days to allow for further investigation. The suspects will reportedly remain in custody but Makhurupetje did want to elaborate on the matter.
She stated that the Police had responded speedily in the matter and that all evidence would be thoroughly investigated. She urged the community to remain calm and to give Police room to continue with their investigations.
She assured that the case was considered high priority and that Police Minister Bheki Cele was also expected to arrive in the city soon as he is anticipated to attend Themane’s funeral on Saturday.
Political party leaders also attended the gathering at court. All agreed that they would continue monitoring the case to ensure that justice is served.
It was learnt that a march will be conducted from a park adjacent to Savannah Mall tomorrow (Friday) at 16:30 to the family home.
