The DA in Standerton, through caucus leader, Mr Rosier de Ville, strongly voiced their concerns recently regarding the Lekwa Municipality whose doors were shut a fortnight ago.
According to a press statement, the mayor, Mr Linda Dhlamini, and the mayoral committee should explain the situation to residents.
Local business forums halted operations at the municipal office with allegations of corruption and maladministration.
The party requested the mayor at a special council meeting on 28 February to investigate the administration, appointment of contractors and spending of municipal money.
Standerton Advertiser has reported extensively on contentious issues such as the chicken broilers in Morgenzon, upgrading of Walter Sisulu Drive, Nelson Mandela Drive and the Morgenzon vehicle testing ground as well as the sale of the Rooikoppen Taxi Rank.
The statement highlighted payments contravening a cabinet resolution of 23 October 2013 as regards cost containment measures.
These measures include payments for the vehicle fleet, mayoral vehicle, hiring of tents for a funeral, photographer, strategic planning session and catering.
The DA estimated the municipality’s debt at more than R937-million.
