Jaco Groenewald and Neil de Jager emerged as the winners in the Race to the Majors’ Royal Birkdale tournament held at Bethal Golf Club on Saturday.

The pair played a combined nett score of 133 in this medal format match. The runners-up were Willie van der Merwe and Corne Klopper on 134, followed by MG Snyman and Willem du Plooy on 135.

The Race to the Majors championship is played over several rounds throughout the year with an upcoming final to crown the overall winners.

This unique concept has 15 two-player teams compete on the Bethal golf course while keeping score on scorecards of major golf tournaments, such as Augusta and Royal Birkdale.

Thus far, the teams have played on the Augusta scorecard, then the PGA Golf Tournament at Aronimink and on Saturday the Royal Birkdale Open Championship.

According to organiser Charles Bodenstein, this was the first year of the Race to the Majors and the management hopes to make this an annual fixture on the club’s calendar.
