Police take action against murderers
Police urge Secunda residents to stay alert.
SECUNDA – The local police want to sensitise the community about murders in Secunda.
“Although is categorised as a contact crime as well as a less policeable crime, when it is being committed and reported to the police, the loss of an individual’s life becomes a major concern to the police,” said Major General M. Kekana, cluster commander of the Secunda Police Station.
According to the police, the number of cases that are reported have increased and it has now become a priority to the police as well as a threat to the community.
The victims of murder are often killed by family members, friends, boyfriends or girlfriends or someone who is known by the victim.
In some cases it is criminal gang activities, organised crime and syndicates.
“Analyses have indicated that these crimes mostly take place at residential premises, on or next to the street, in the veld, at business premises and at or next to taverns or drinking places,” said Major General Kekana.
According to Secunda Police, the instruments that were used to commit these murders are sharp instruments, firearms, knives and iron pipes.
Social and domestic related cases, alcohol and drug abuse also contributed to the escalation of this crime.
The police came up with and are implementing effective crime prevention strategies and operations to reduce murders.
Structures such as community police forums (CPF) and non-profit organisations are forming part of this strategy apart from the reported plan and the re-establishment of this plan.
The police conducted vehicle patrols and executed intensive investigations where they managed to effect some arrests and the perpetrators of this crime were heavily sentenced and others are still undergoing serious trials.
“According to the constitution of South Africa, everybody has a right to freedom of movement, freedom of protection and the right to life.
“Stay alert, stay alive and do not expose yourself to danger.
“To the culprits out there, your movements are monitored and soon you will be where you belong for life,” said Major General Kekana.
