eMBALENHLE – Going to school barefoot or with worn-out shoes will be a thing of the past for the underprivileged pupils from at the Maphala Gulube Primary School.
The Gert Sibande District Municipality in partnership with Sasol handed out school shoes and bags to needy pupils on Thursday, 16 January.
Mr Nhlakanipho Zuma, MMC for the Department of Community and Social Services, said they cannot shy away from situations where pupils go to school without proper uniforms.
“We need to work together to ensure that the future of the children is secured.
“I would like to call on all of us to work together and ensure that we do something to guarantee that our children go to school with a full stomach and being dressed properly.”
Mr Zuma encouraged business people to help those who are less fortunate.
Mr Isaac Modise, Sasol manager: Community Affairs, encouraged pupils to study hard despite being poor.
Ms Thembi Muthuphi, deputy principal of the school, said it was a dream come true for these children.
She said many of her pupils come from needy families.
More than 130 school shoes and bags were handed out to schools in the Gert Sibande district since the schools had re-opened on 15 January.
This intervention is aimed at supporting vulnerable school children who cannot afford school uniforms across the seven municipalities.
