Hoërskool Secunda knocked out

Hoërskool Secunda was one of the schools that competed in the Coca-Cola 30 Minute Heroes Challenge.

SECUNDA – Hoërskool Secunda is out of the Coca-Cola T20 schools challenge after losing to Uplands College in the Mpumalanga knock-out stage of the competition.

This competition was introduced to schools participating in the Coca-Cola T20 schools Cricket Challenge and aimed at getting pupils to participate in physical activity.

In the competition pupils completed a five drill circuit within a 30 minute period.

The school that completes the most circuits in the allotted time frame stands a chance to win an outdoor gym to the value of 200 000 rand, which will be installed at the winning school.

Mr Paul van den Berg, director of Marketing and PR for Hoërskool Secunda, said: “I think we did well considering we were knocked out by the top provincial schools.

“Our performance on the day was fair, but in terms of fun it was excellent.

“We did not meet our target of the number of people we wanted to get through the programme, but it was an excellent bonding session.

“All the kids got together and encouraged one another to get active and generally it was an excellent exercise at the beginning of the year when everyone is trying to settle into school and get to know one another.

“We made a day of it and allowed the pupils to wear casual clothes, which added to the fun.

“This is a great Coca-Cola initiative and I hope they do more activities like this.”

The Coca-Cola 30 Minute Heroes Challenge include five drills which are shuttle runs between six beacons, moving a cricket ball from one beacon to the next, target throwing at a set of wickets, skipping with a skipping rope, catching balls off a rebound board and weaving in and out of 10 slalom poles.

Mr Fetsi Mbele, Coca-Cola South Africa Marketing Assets Manager, said: “The Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge is about making heroes.

“This grass roots tournament is where heroes are unearthed and then progress through to the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week, an annual tournament, sponsored by Coca-Cola South Africa for over 30 years.

“It has to date produced over 200 Proteas players.

“Through our Coca-Cola T20 30 Minute Hero Challenge we are encouraging all schools in the country to adopt a physically active lifestyle that will become a lifelong practice.”
