Christa loves art

BETHAL – Ms Christa Pavlou has loved art since she was a little girl.

“I studied art at the University of Pretoria and was teaching figure and object drawing at Bloemfontein Technikon.”

” I am very fond of figure drawing and consider it to be my strong point.”

She was teaching art at the Camps Bay Highschool in Cape Town and is currently painting and teaching private art classes in her home town.

She exhibited at several galleries since her completion of her Ba(FA)-degree at the University of Pretoria.

Ms Pavlou was one of the top 14 students at Thembisa.

The style she is working with is a meticulous layering of paint using liquid with which she builds the painting up layer by layer and sometimes one painting consists of four or more layers. The more layers, the richer the overall effect becomes in the end and this process is based upon the old master style of painting.

“I feel that each painting needs to be treated differently and I tend not to work according to rules.

“Growing up on a farm in the Highveld region where there are lots of open plains and many horizons, I always felt that there must be more to life than what I can only see around me, and yet I was oblivious to what was really happening around me.”

She grew up in the midst of apartheid and never knew that it existed until later after leaving her carefree childhood behind.

” I do not want to base my work on politics, this is not the reason why I paint, however I do want to express my opinion on these issues, especially on the African women and their position during these times,” Ms Pavlou said.

This is the reason why painting or art is a field where one can learn something new daily.

She works with a wide variety of brushes in one painting to create different effects, from blending, liner, zero five size to a normal size oil painting brush.

Ms Pavlou will be exhibiting in Cape Town at the Rust and Vrede Gallery on 3 June.
