Crime on Evander farms worries police
Killings on farms emanate from illegal gold digging and the fight over girlfriends.
EVANDER – Immigrants living on local farms will have to produce their passports when police do operations.
The local police are worried about unidentified people and shooting incidents.
Lt Jabulani Motsoeneng, head of visible policing, urged landlords at a meeting on Wednesday, 14 May to have particulars of their tenants before renting out rooms.
“It does not make sense that when somebody is murdered, nobody knows where the person comes from.”
Many of the people living in the area are mainly from Lesotho and Transkei.
Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, communications officer, said some work at the mines and others make a living through illegal gold digging.
It is suspected that some of the killings emanate from these illegal activities and fights in shebeens over girlfriends.
Sgt Mbuli said several rape incidents were also reported.
Tenants on one farm said they do not experience any crime.
They said crime increases when people from the Mandela Section come there.
Tenants from the another farm welcomed the police’s initiative to hold the meeting with them to discuss crime.
The residents from both farms have elected people who will work with the police.
They will also represent the residents at the annual general meeting of the Community Policing Forum that will be held at the Gert Sibande FET College at 5pm on 28 May.
