99% Zulu comedy becomes 100% fun
“Show helps spread and broaden the comedy economy, while giving our vernacular languages more commercial value.”
SECUNDA – Stand-up comedians dished out laughter at the first 99% Zulu Comedy Show at the Graceland Casino on Saturday, 26 July.
People were left in stitches with some almost falling off their seats and others wiping tears away.
The line-up included Secunda’s very own Sifiso Blackberry Mahlangu, SimphiweShembe, Siyanda Maphumulo, Skhumba Hlophe, TsietsiMatlakala, Elton Mduduzi Ntuli and Mpukane.
The Idols sensation Siyanda Maphumulo brought the house down with his golf ball and his song imot’ensthontsh’ imali.
Monwabisi Grootboom, producer of Wow Entertainment, said: “The general aim of the 99% Zulu Comedy is to create a deliberate interest in stand-up comedy with the African language speakers, while seeking to address a wide range of social challenges facing our country through certain objectives.
“Performing in mother-tongue is perhaps the most revolutionary development in our little SA comedy industry.
“This helps spread and broaden the comedy economy, while giving our vernacular languages more commercial value.
“The show is mainly attended by the politically and socially aware young professional to a decision maker that is simply proud of his African cultural heritage and yet conversant with urban lifestyle.”
Amos Nkosi who attended the show, said he enjoyed it and that he never thought that a vernacular stand up can be so nice.
“The 99% Zulu Comedy was 100 per cent fun.
“We salute the comedians for talking in our African languages and it was also nice to see our local comedian Sifiso performing.”
